Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Department of Speech of Washington State University, established in 1923, has produced numerous plays since 1925 as a function of that department. Maynard Lee Daggy headed the Speech Department from its inception in 1923 until 1946 and directed many of the earlier productions. Departmental theatrical finances, publicity, and publications were the responsibility of the University Theatre office located in Bryan Hall. In the early 1970s a new site for University Theatre productions and the Department of Speech was constructed and subsequently named Daggy Hall. Circa 1988-1989, theatre was moved from Speech and joined with the Department of Music to create the School of Music and Theatre Arts. In 2008, Theatre Arts and Dance were separated from Music, and in May of 2011 the Department of Theatre and Dance closed as a result of budget cuts.

In addition to regular theatre productions, special production units including Children's Theatre, Stage II Productions, Final Stage, The Black Ensemble, Pullman's New Summer Palace, and Stage One have existed. With the exception of Summer Palace, most of these appear to have been sporadic, and were occasionally short lived.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collections contains theatrical posters advertising theater events at Washington State University. Most of the performances are by the WSU theatre program, or by affiliated departments (speech, music). The collection is far from complete. Most of the posters were created by students.

The first set of materials are laminated posters, retained separately from others because they often have remnants of tape or other adhesives which had been used to attach them to walls, and which would damage the unlaminated materials. Series two is unlaminated posters of performances. The third series is a set of unlaminated posters originating in specific annual events. It has two main subseries, Summer Palace and Stage One.

Most of the posters were used for display before coming to the Archives, and may have pinholes, tape remnants, lamination, or other forms of defacement.

Arrangement

The materials are broken into three series, with the third series further divided into 2 subseries. All series and subseries are arranged chronologically by performance dates.

Acquisition Information

The “WSU Publications” collections are an accumulation of materials transferred to Washington State University Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections on a nearly daily basis. Some items are transferred directly by the University’s printing department. Many other materials have been forwarded by the Library’s serials cataloging unit. Other items come directly from university departments, and a significant number of publications have been donated by individuals. Most materials in it have no accession records.

Processing Note

The "WSU Publications" collection is an effort to amass significant or representative publications of the University. The effort began in 1955. Until 1977, the publications were managed as part of the university archives. In that year, office records were separated from the publications in order to follow the spirit of the Washington State public records laws. The separation was all but complete; nonetheless, small quantities of non-published materials, records, remain among the WSU Publications. In 1970-1975, Library employees prepared a library card catalog for the WSU Publications collection. That catalog was transcribed and adapted by Tyler Evans and Jeff Zundel in 2005-2006. This particular series was processed in January of 2012 by University Archivist Mark O'English.
