Historical NoteReturn to Top
Thomas Heuterman (1934-), professor of communication at Washington State University, was raised in Wapato, Washington. He received his bachelor's degree and Ph.D. from WSU, and his master's degree from the University of Washington. Prior to joining the WSU faculty, he worked as a reporter for the Yakima Herald-Republic.
Heuterman's teaching specialties included public affairs reporting, communication history, and writing (journalism). He also worked closely with students outside the classroom, serving as the newsroom adviser to the student newspaper, the Evergreen. His research interests were primarily in communication history, including the American frontier press. His published works include Movable Type: Biography of Legh R. Freeman and The Burning Horse: Japanese-American Experience in the Yakima Valley, 1920-1942.

Most of the materials in this collection are related to Thomas Heuterman's work as a member of the faculty in the Washington State University Department of Communication. He collected materials related to the history of the department, some of which had originally been gathered by his predecessors and colleagues; he also collected news articles and other documentation of major financial and political issues at the university, as well as issues of alternative newspapers. While most of this material has been retained in this collection, a series of departmental memoranda and faculty minutes has been separated for processing as departmental archives.
